Conjuring up images of motorcycles, race horses, converse sneakers, American flags and the wild west, Show Pony celebrates all things that are ostentatiously American. With a similar color palette to other recent works, the silhouettes and typography are highlighted against the spare reds, blacks and whites. The bold font and clear lines are reminiscent of works by Robert Indiana, an American artist who was associated predominantly with the pop art movement and is noted for his “LOVE” print and subsequent United States Postal Service 1973 “LOVE” stamp. The central image of a horse, flanked by stars, stripes and titular phrases is suggestive of a poster or even an advertisement for a show. While a ‘show pony’ is a confident individual who tends to be flashy in public to garner admiration, this overzealous horse is an equally flamboyant performer. Even in a blocked-out silhouette, the featured pony is adorned with a beautifully flowing main and luxurious tail.
