A playful and arresting work, I Hit My Head & This Is What I Saw immediately demands attention. Quite literally a concussive amalgam of color and line, the painting features minimal tones and bold shapes. As in many of Ryan’s pieces the title is both witty and informative, specifically guiding the viewer through the thematic predilections. Reminiscent of cartoon strips and action stories, the bright red coupled with the zig-zagging form at the top suggest a certain physicality. While simple in stroke, there is an overall potency that conjures a thought of a ‘POW,’ ‘ZAP’ or ‘BAM,’ as well as other phrases associated with superheroes, action characters or even people who bang their heads.
