60" Oil On Board
Created as part of a commission for the hit television show Gotham, World Record Holder draws upon the visual power of signs and highlights the importance of typography. Working in a similar vein as Robert Indiana, Ryan’s use of text addresses notions of identity, power and cultural unity. The unique shape of the board supplies a new context in which to interpret the work and morphs it into an extension of traditional painting. Additionally the use of bold colors and varying modes of transparency provide a graphic and stark contrast between shape and form.
