Ryan Cronin

Unsane

Unsane

*Unsane* is a painting about the sources that stay with us. Cronin made it in response to a band that had been in his rotation for years, and that rotation has held steady in the time since.

His work has always tapped into a kind of nostalgia, the cultural objects and sounds we carry from one chapter of our lives into the next. Most of those sources stay invisible inside the practice. *Unsane* is one of the places where Cronin named one directly, on the surface, in the language of the band itself. Stars, chevrons, the rough vernacular of 1950s painted signs running into the rough vernacular of loud rock. Two American traditions, both built from the street, holding each other on the same board.

A painting about what we keep.
