Three colorful artworks of an owl, a crow, and a butterfly by Artist Ryan Cronin on a wall.

Thirty Years. And Still Making.

Ryan Cronin has been making work for thirty years. Paintings, sculpture, drawings, public installations, and the kind of long-running collaborations that turn a practice into something larger than itself.

The Cronin Gallery has been the home of that work for more than a decade. A permanent space in New Paltz, run by Melanie Cronin, in the heart of the Hudson Valley. From there, the work moves out: into international galleries, museum collections, public spaces, and the lives of collectors around the world.

You're welcome here. Look around.

The Art

Color is where Cronin starts. Not decoratively. Structurally. He builds a painting around color the way an architect builds around weight, and people respond before they can say why.

The paint matters. Cronin works in Rust-Oleum, the high-gloss enamel a contractor uses to keep machinery from rusting. It's the same gloss that lives on a beer can or a roadside sign. The paint and the subject come from the same shelf.

There is no fabricator. On any given day, that might mean sparks flying in front of the studio as Cronin cuts into a salvaged home heating oil tank, transforming it by hand into sculpture. The work comes directly from him. The material is everywhere.

Cronin's work is held in private and corporate collections internationally. To see what's currently available, look closer.

Our Projects

Some of Cronin's most significant works live outside the gallery, in public spaces, through partnerships, in unexpected places. Expect A Bike. The Box. Art4Lax. We Are Public Health. The work extends beyond the piece itself and draws upon the audience as part of the act of creating art.

There's a history here, and there are active projects unfolding right now. If you're curious, we invite you to dive in and explore.

The Practice

In 2019, Cronin was selected by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation for residency at Thread, the cultural center in Sinthian, Senegal, designed by architect Toshiko Mori. The collaboration continues today.

One chapter of a thirty-year practice that has never stayed on the wall. Murals, sculpture, salvaged industrial objects, public installations, work made on whatever surface earns it next.
