An explosive work, Fracture I features a vibrant color palette painted in more muddled hues. With bold outlines and varying weight of line depth the work contains a great deal of visual movement. While the painting is generally cartoonish in form it is also very stylized, particularly in the loose treatment of the edges. Rather than using an instrument such as a ruler or creating marks with tape, Ryan painted the lines freehand therefore creating slightly skewed marks. The intentional act of exposing his process and intervention in the work connects artist to painting. Additionally, the complimentary colors of blues and oranges are stark against the deep black background. A true âfracturingâ of space, the jutting lines and splashes cut the canvas.
