A dynamic work, Punk Rock Girl features a swatch of color tones in varying hues. A mixture of the primary colors, with bold outlines and blocked out sections, the work has a great deal of visual movement and directionality. The scene includes two sets of feet which are rendered with basic outlines and simple gestural lines. The shapes are not fully formed and there are no shadows or finer details. Existing as an amalgam of shapes, the title focuses the piece and structures the scope of understanding. As the scene itself is bright and playful the title sets up the scene as a zone in which the viewer anticipates a ‘punk rock girl.’ Forms appear as shapes, and then as feet and then as punk boots even. Punk rock music genre is usually associated with harsh colors and louder tones, and while the painting includes bright yellows, reds, blues and some black, the background is a lighter and more pastel wash which suggests a sweeter nature. This congruence potentially highlights more normatively feminine traits within this ‘punk rock girl.’
